Connoisseur of Cheap Scotch
by on Apr.11, 2008, under Whiskey
Whiskey, in general, is one of the more expensive tastes, starting fairly cheap, but ending up limitlessly expensive if you look hard enough. In my year abroad in Sheffield, England, I had the opportunity to acquire and refine my whiskey tastes. A few friends and I split a bottle every Friday before going out (ahh, student life), giving us ample opportunity to sample what was on offer at the off-license.
Weekly drinking on a student budget rules out the single malts (I’ll get deeper into whiskey and explain the details later, don’t you worry), so it becomes a question of who makes the nicest blend. I remember loading up a hired car with a dozen bottles of simple white label black plain font “SCOTCH WHISKEY” before going on a road trip around Scotland. That was, as expected, just about the worst-tasting blend possible.
Our reigning champion was…. Grant’s! Blended from Glenfiddich scraps, we found Grant’s to be the smoothest, most flavorful, least head-snapping-back of all the budget whiskies.

It’s not the greatest, and you can do pretty well with mid-level whiskies for your bucks, but if you’re really running low on cash, Grant’s is your best bet.
