How Long Should I Work Before Taking Vacation Days Off?
by James on Jul.12, 2009, under Vacations
Hey everyone. I’ve been working at my job for a month and at my job i slowly accumulate vacation time. I havent taken any vacation days off. How long should i wait before i take a few days off?? What would be the proper etiquette in this situation? It’s a white collar job if that matters.

I think that once you earned your vacation days you should be able to use them. Vacation days are good for people. Why would the company give you benefits they didn’t want you to use?
If you think you still need to make a good impression, you might wait until you feel secure in your position, and like the time off won’t mess you up, but I don’t see why you’d need to wait more than two or three months, particularly if you have something you need to use a vacation day for – a wedding, etc. If you work for a good company they should understand that life is just as important as work. I had an out-of-state family emergency my first week of work, and my boss was very understanding. It might depend on where you work, but that’s what I think.

I’d say AT LEAST 3 months, but most likely it’d be best to wait 6.

Honestly — after a year.
However, if you really NEED to take a day off, wait at least six months into the job. It just looks better.

You’ve been working a month and want to take vacation time? Sheesh. I can’t imagine that you’ve accrued “a few days” in a month’s service to take off. Be that as it may, I think 6 months is reasonable, etiquette-wise.
