Lessons From Luggage – Plan Your Business’s High Payoff Voyage
by James on Jan.07, 2010, under Around the World

I just finished unpacking my bags after six weeks of travel. As I put things away I found myself reviewing whether it had been worth carrying each item with me for the duration of the trip. I kept thinking back to my vision for them all those weeks back.
Luggage, and how we use it, is a great reflection of how we live our business lives.
Why do I say that? Because the way we carry and use our luggage in travel is much like the way we carry the ‘luggage’ of our Know How and skills and use our resources through our business lives.
My coaching clients have shown me that most of the time they’re unaware of what result they get from their old ideas, old decision-making habits and old communication style. They carry that luggage with them each day as they go to meetings, solve the challenges that arise, and strategize the growth of their business. And their shoulders ache.
I hauled a load of luggage for six weeks – 37 pounds of clothes and books, 16 pounds of computer, back up drive, cell phone and cables and work papers, and the ever present 6 pound oversized purse to use each day.
I regret about half of the clothes. But I wouldn’t have left them out despite the weight of hauling them from plane to metro to hotel to ship, etc. in 8 locations. My shoulders were aching from the weight, yet I knew why I was carrying each item and how I intended to use it.
Have you noticed, your shoulders are arching, probably with old luggage rather than what you actually need on your trip.
I used the following 3 steps last week to help one of my client’s look at where she’s headed, what’s needed to get there. She took a fresh look at the baggage of old skills and habits she was hauling along and why her shoulders were aching.
These steps will ensure you’re getting the best value out of what you’re taking with you.
Step 1 – Evaluate where you’re headed
Identify what you ‘really’ need to take with you. I knew I was going to be in weather that ranged from 21C/70sF to 40C/100+F on a regular basis, with a wonderful alpine side trip to a glacier where the temperature would be as low as freezing with gusting wind. I knew I’d be taking clothes that could be layered so I wouldn’t have to take multiple wardrobes. And I knew that meant I’d be seeing clothes I’d not be wearing every time I opened my suitcase.
Where are you and your team heading? Do you know the conditions you’ll encounter on the journey?
Step 2 – Review what you’re carrying with you
Many of the items I had in my suitcase were purchased specifically for this trip. I When I did some research knew that what I already owned wouldn’t serve me on this particular trip. The world has changed since I last traveled and there were several items that became apparent as missing from my travel took kit: locks, laundry cord, cotton skirts, 3 oz bottles for the fluids I’d be taking with me.
You and your team have years of experience and Know How. Do you know what you have on hand in skills and talents and resources?
Once you can name what you need it leads naturally to
Step 3 – Locate where you can get what you need now for your trip
Some of the resources I needed were easily found – the corner drug store and every other shop in the city is selling the new locks.
Cotton skirts that were precisely what I was looking for took 10 shopping trips and that’s devotion – I hate to shop!
Worst of all – those little innocent “3-ounce bottles”. I knew I needed to carry right up to the limit and when I saw the industry standard of 2 ounce and 4 ounce sizes it made me nuts! Round bottles waste a great deal of space in the required plastic pouch and no one had 3-ouncers. That meant lots of wasted space! After weeks of searching, I found newly released 3-ounce flat containers in a beauty supply store.
Why did I spend all that time on these 3 steps? I knew it would be High Payoff if I could find those resources. And in fact the trip was smooth sailing once I had those resources as I didn’t have to give them any further attention for six whole weeks of travel.
The result for my client? She realized that she needs to delegate 30% of the work she now does so that she’ll have the time and attention to grow her company. She now knows she doesn’t need someone full-time, nor in her same city, nor even time zone. She needs a person she can reliably hand work off to and know it will be done properly. Period. Her perfect next resource is a Virtual Assistant.
So, what’s the tool you need for the next project or business challenge you’re facing? Are the resources you’re planning to use really a fit? Are they High Payoff or will they actually slow you down and demand ongoing time and attention?
Now’s the time to evaluate the luggage you’re carrying with you and see if it’s still a fit for your journey.

Useful Stuff to Bring Along on Your Backpacking Trip – Checklist
by James on Jan.04, 2010, under Around the World
There are lots of stuff you can bring along on your backpacking trip. Remember that you have to carry all of it so think twice before bringing a bulky heavy item. Here are some miscellaneous items I have found useful to bring along:
- Universal bath plug/sink stopper There are plugs which fit a variety of sinks which are very useful when you want to do laundry in your room.
- Water porter A bag designed to carry water bottles, quite handy when you are out on day trips and do not want to carry a backpack around.
- Luggage protection bag To put around your backpack to save it from being damaged while traveling.
- Luggage straps To tie around your backpack to help hold it together.
- Luggage label Attaches to the outside of your luggage and gives your contact details in case your bag gets lost.
- Plastic bags Bags to put around bottles with liquid and also to organize the rest of your stuff. Use white bags without print since some coloured plastic bags tend to rub off colour on other items in your backpack.
- Candy Binoculars Great for spotting wildlife.
- Deck of cards/games To kill time and have fun with people you meet along the way.
- Sewing kit Safety pin Swiss army knife Scissors Backpack Daypack Rubber bands To be used as bookmarks in your guidebook.
- Locks To lock your daypack and backpack.
- Money belt/leg pouch Put the documents/money in a protective plastic case in case the money belt gets wet (e.g. from rain).
- Pen and paper (notebook) The notebook can be used for tracking expenses, collecting e-mails, keeping a journal etc.
- Mask, snorkel and fins For diving or snorkelling.
- Sports equipment Surf board, golf clubs, diving equipment etc.
- Mosquito net Make sure you have a nail or similar to be able to attach the net to the wall or ceiling.
- Wire Used to tie your backpack to your bed or the luggage rack to prevent people from walking away with your bag.
- Camping equipment Tents, stoves etc.
- Knife, fork, spoon, jug, plate If you plan to cook a lot.
- Compass Get a small one which you can keep on you all the time.
- Extra bag to check in An extra bag to store your souvenirs if they do not fit in your backpack. Used to bring home souvenirs you buy during your trip. While traveling this can double as a bag to store dirty clothes.
- Water bottle for the plane These days there are restrictions on what you can bring on board including liquids. You can go through security with an empty bottle and fill it up in the bathroom before boarding though (if the water is drinkable).
- Presents If you plan on visiting people a small gift from your country will be appreciated.

School Backpack Shopping – Tips To Select The Best One For Your Child
by James on Nov.28, 2009, under Around the World
While parents are nervous for their children who are just beginning in kindergarten or even pre-school, the kids are getting wound up in the purchase for their first backpack. Many people consider this a rite of passage! One that many children won’t soon forget.
Backpacks come in an extensive assortment of colors, themes and styles. It really boils down to deciding which backpack is works for child. By starting early, parents and students have more to choose from at a reasonable price. This is one way to discover the ideal backpack.
When it comes to school backpacks, the younger children have many choices to go through. Many cartoon characters are on the backpacks. For girls, there are book bags with the Disney Princess line of flower and a butterfly design. One small design flaw for these is that they are pastel in color and can get filthy pretty easily. Cleaning will need to be done quite often to keep them looking good and new.
For boys, there are skateboard versions to action figures and characters on the backpack. Cleaning these bags, is a bit easier because the colors are not as vibrant.
Should you be choosing a book bag for either genders in the littlest age group, parents will want a bag that is well done and made and very durable. Should it look as if the bag will fall a part before the child’s second semester in school, it is not a buy that should be made. This is even more true if the child’s favorite character is on the bag.
The older children, those in high school and even college, do have plenty of alternatives when it comes to school book bags.
Nowadays, these styles come equipped with a laptop carrier. They can even place other electronic devices that have become very important to high school students. One such device is a calculator. Though not used often in high school, some teachers do allow them.
For college level students who walk on a large campus and live on the campus, it is important that these backbags can carry most of their books should all their classes be held right after the other. Some of these styles include backpacks with wheels (a welcome relief to those who walk a great distance or have a bad back).
Many high schools do not like the rolling design backpack because it can destroy their floors. They also do not fit well in the school lockers. The bags at this stage normally costs more and more money should be spent on it to be sure it does not rip or tear while the students uses it. Typically, students at this age level take much better care of the bag.
Backpacks are a wonderful tool to keep your child’s supplies, books and assignments organized.

Dog Backpack – How To Teach Your Dog To Carry One
by James on Nov.17, 2009, under Around the World
Many people have pets today whether it is cats, fish, birds, iguanas or even dogs. Yet, none of these animals except man’s best friend can go along with the family on outdoor vacations and enjoy the fun the family does.
There are many things and places to go with your dog to camp, hike or just experience the great outdoors with other happening events. Many of these folks like to bring their dogs with them to have them carry some of the gear, which does indeed relieve the stress on their own backs. So if “Fido” happens to be a big dog and you are bringing him along on the next outing, look into buying him or her their own dog backpacks.
For as long dogs have been domesticated, they have been taveling companions to their owners. These dogs can carry a load that may seem too heavy to its owner by wearing a backpack. Dogs will also help in with the mundane things such as help bring groceries home. Other people may take their dog to a trip of some kind, especially camping or hiking. This is when its backpack comes in handy because it can carry items such as extra food and water for the four legged member, among many other things an owner would like to take.
For a dog who is relatively healthy, he or she can carry about a quarter of their body weight in gear on his or her back. This means for a large dog, it is possible they can carry 20 or so pounds.
People need to remember these are dogs and not all will take to the backpack in the beginning. It may take some training before they are okay with it in the long run
Training the Dog to Wear the Pack
How can you get a dog used to wearing a dog backpack? First, have them lie on their back so they are accustomed to the weight on it. Second, let them wear an empty backpack. This allows them to get used to the straps around their body. This may take some time but once they are used to it, put two bottles of water in the pack so the dog can feel what it is like to carry something in the backpack on the back.
It is vital that the dog gets fitted for the backpack. Like humans, dogs can become uncomfortable and maybe even injured if the pack is not correctly fitted. The same rules apply to most dog packs.
- Be sure straps are secure and comfortable; they need to be loose enough for one finger to slip through the band and the dog’s body.
- Test backpack when dog is sitting, standing and lying down; the straps can change fit in these different positions.
There are some backpacks that have straps, which will go behind the dog’s elbows. However, this is a very susceptible area and not recommended. It is possible to find a backpack that will fit a dog without the straps.
