Make Backpacking Gear Lighter With Multi-use Items
by James on Jan.23, 2010, under Around the World
Backpacking involves walking long distances with heavy gear on your back. That is the essence of the sport, but it does not have to be the reason why you give it up or can no longer do it. You do not have to struggle with heavy equipment. There are things you can do to make your backpack lighter and reduce the strain on your body.
By packing items that has multiple use, you will definitely reduce the number of the items required to pack. In the end, you will also reduce the weight of your pack. This is great for someone who simply can not handle the weight or who is suffering from back problems due to the weight of their backpack.
It is actually quite easy to figure ways to get more than one use out of some typical gear. You can likely use many of the items you already carry and be able to eliminate the use of other items you carry. Additionally, there are other pieces of gear that have multiple uses, too. In fact, you probably already are using pieces of your gear in more than one way without even realizing it.
You may not be parachuting on your backpack trip but a parachute cord is a usefully piece of gear is lightweight and offers a few different uses. It can be used as a clothesline or to tie your food bag up when camping overnight. You can also use it in case of an emergency to tie a splint in place. To pack it you loosely wind it up and hook it to the outside of your pack.
You may have brought candles along just for a little extra lighting, but candles do more than provide light. A candle can be used to help start a stubborn fire and works as a great waterproofing agent. They are lightweight and you will barely even notice if you add them to your pack. In addition they are better than to carry a lantern, which is heavy.
Duct tape is commonly know around the house as the ultimate ‘do-it-all’ tool. Duct tapes are durable and they are very strong in nature. A roll can last you a long time and it has many helpful uses. It can be used to insulate, as a wrap for a bandage and repairing tents, backpacks and almost everything else. Duct tape should always be a part of your backpacking gear.
Safety pins are another great item to pack as it is light and easy to pack. Safety pins can come in helpful to secure bandages, act as clothespins or hooks to hang items and as a stand in fish hook.
Plastic placemats are also lightweight and easy to pack. Plastic placemats can be utilized in many different ways. Instead of sitting on blankets and getting them wet, use a placemat. Use it to set your shoes on, so you do not get dirt and mud in your tent. Be creative and you can find other uses. For example, you can use a fly swatter to prepare food.
You may find that you can cut your gear down by several pieces by simply using multifunctional gear. You can also take out items that the multi-use gear is replacing. The key is to find items that are light and the item can be used in many situations. It takes some creative thinking, but you will be able to do it.
What Gear Does An Experienced Backpacker Take On The Trail For An Overnight, Cold Weather Hike/camp?
by James on Dec.25, 2009, under Around the World
Backpacking, tent camping, and spending a night out in nature are great activities. An overnight trip doesn’t seem much time to really get into it. My suggestions is decide where you are going to go, what season you will be going, who you will be going with. What activities you will be doing, and what are the conditions you may encounter. Take into consideration, your age, abilities, capabilities and weaknesses. Assess your situation. Plan for the worst and expect the best.
For a two full day – one night trip I would consider the length of hike you will be involved with and how much you are willing to carry. Fully loaded 4500 to 6500 cubic inch packs can way as much as 70 lbs. A ten mile hike in and a ten mile hike out with all of that weight can be most tiring for even the avid hiker.
The basics for a good hike involve some planning for weight, and size. A moderate down or poly sleeping bag that can be compressed into a stuff sack and a lightweight tent will keep you quite comfortable for the time being. If water is available and you can filter it will reduce the weight of carrying water. Hydration systems are the latest generation to the old clumsy canteen. You will need to consider the body will need at least 2 liters of water a day in mild or moderate temperatures. Foods that are easy to prepare are great for overnighters. Dried fruits and nuts provide an excellent source of energy while hiking. Remember, what ever trash you bring in you will need to take out with you. Plan for the change of weather, a pile of clothes make a good pillow at night. A compass, and map are great to have. (learn how to use them first!) I carry a handheld GPS and a camera. Enjoy nature and the outdoors.
Backpacking Gear
by James on Nov.11, 2009, under Around the World
A backpacking trip is enjoyable and adventurous. It enables you to explore nature and have a wonderful time outdoors. However, you need to be very careful while choosing your backpacking gear. You need to carefully think about the items what you need to carry (on your backpack) and what you can manage to leave behind.
There are a few items that you can afford to leave behind but you cannot go on a backpacking trip without some essential ones. Backpacks, trek poles, hiking boots, polarized sunglasses, water-resistant outerwear and sunglasses are some of the basic equipment needed for any backpacking trip. These items should be carried with the backpacker in order to prevent injury as well as provide necessities while being away from modern amenities.
The basic backpacking gear requires four essential things: something to sleep in, something to sleep under, safety equipment, food and clothes. Backpacking sleeping bags vary in comfort and weight. Polarguard 3D can be an excellent choice of backpacking gear, because it is light weight and comfortable when compared to other sleeping bags.
How can you forget to leave a flashlight behind? It is very important to carry a flashlight along with you to ensure that you can always see where you are going. Not having adequate lighting can lead to falls or injuries and that can really ruin a good backpacking trip. Clothing is something that cannot be forgotten. You need to carry comfortable and functional clothes. Always carry a raincoat and warm clothes along, in case if the weather condition becomes bad.
Other important equipments that you need to carry while going for a backpacking trip are: appropriate clothing, food supplies, hiking boots, raincoats, camping tent, map of the area, foldable furniture (if possible), utensils and a camp heater or stove. These are some of the essential equipments that you definitely need to carry along, but make sure that they are light-weight and reusable.
So, what are you waiting for? Pack your bag and have a wonderful camping trip!

Tripod Backpacks That Hold Your Camera Gear Make It Easy To Shoot
by James on Oct.17, 2009, under Around the World
If you are like me, you love photography. To me there is nothing more relaxing than going out into the woods with my backpack and camera to shoot some amazing wildlife. Unless I am hiking with friends, I usually always bring my tripod along, that way I can get good still, focused photographs of whatever I choose.
I have a backpack for my camera gear, but I have always had trouble lugging the tripod through the woods. What I found online last year has made my life a lot easier. What is it you ask? A backpack to hold my camera’s tripod.
Yes You Can Buy Tripod Backpacks Online
There are many digital online accessory stores online. Are some better than others? Yes, but if you look around the net you will surely find one that carries what you are looking for at a reasonable price.
There are two advantages to buying digital accessories, like tripod backpacks. One is that you can get what you are looking for at a great price because it is easy to shop around and pick the best deal. Second, you can find what you need. You don’t need to drive from store to store trying to find accessories that match your digital equipment.
If you are a photographer, at a good camera accessory website you should be able to find:
* Cameras
* Lenses
* Tripods
* Flash lighting meters

If you are looking for a backpack bag for your camera’s tripod, shop for yourself. There are many different kinds, and in my opinion, what size and style you like is completely up to you, it just depends on what you want and need.
Features of a Tripod Backpack
Whatever backpack tripod camera bag you choose, there are some features you should be aware of that one of these bags can offer. For one, you will be able to replace your regular backpack that you have been stuffing your stuff into.
Most of the tripod camera backpacks have plenty of room for all of your stuff. Multiple pockets make it a great way to organize and keep track of your cameras, lenses, batteries, etc. Hopefully you won’t have to worry about keeping track of all you stuff or losing vital pieces of equipment in all the packing and unpacking chaos.
If you are like me and like to venture to far off places to take your photos, then you will find a backpack to hold your tripod and all other camera gear very handy. It hasn’t necessarily improved my photography, but it has enabled me to get where I need to go easier and faster. Best of all, it keeps me organized so I don’t forget or lose anything.
