Where Can A Student Backpacker Go For An Inexpensive Breakfast In Marseille France? And What Can I Do For Fun?
by James on Feb.12, 2010, under Around the World
The way to eat an inexpensive meal any where is to eat what the locals eat.
In France the custom is to eat a very light breakfast of cafe au lait and a sweet roll or simply a piece of bread with some butter and jam. Juice is sometimes also taken.
Walk into almost any cafe in the early morning, stand at the counter (what they call “le zinc”) and ask for “cafe complet.”
In France prices are different depending on whether you sit or stand and if you sit, where you sit. Standing at the counter is always the cheapest.
By law all prices have to be displayed so that they can be seen before you enter the establishment. Be sure to check before entering any place. Here you’ll be able to see the distinction between prices at the counter (au comptoir), at an inside table (grand salle) or at a table on the terrace.
