Believe me, the Philippines has a severe lack of infrastructure if you want to backpack. Additionally, I think your chances of being victimized by criminals are much higher in the Philippines. Stick with Thailand.

I don't think there is much difference between those two countries. However there are more tourists in Thailand than Philippines , so you might be able to enjoy better and cheaper facilities like transportation , accomodation and food. However if i were to choose one, i would say Thailand is a better choice regardless if you were a normal tourist or a backpacker. The only plus point for Philippines is that most people there speak English so as a backpacker this might be what you need.

As a backpacker Thailand is definately easier to get around. The Philippines is harder to get around by land and is not set up to cater for backpacking, except in certain areas, but not camping.Travelling around takes a lot of hard work,a lot of time, and is not comfortable.Rooms are mostly very basic and all are overpriced. But the people are so friendly and their lives simple. Its noisy and poluted where there is traffic, smelly and rough,so you have to konw where you are destined.Asking for information while there is never dependable.

Since your question asks which is easier, I will say Thailand. Infrastructure for getting around, and backpacker bungalows are everywhere, so if you are just looking for easy, Thailand is it. However, I will say that if you are up for a bit more of a challenge, as the Philippines has been a bit less travelled by backpackers, you will find it much more enjoyable and fascinating. Also, it is very easy to communicate with everyone there, so you can make lifelong friends with the very warm local people. I have lived in and travelled extensively in both countries, and I love both countries, but if I were going to choose one right now, I would recommend Philippines. But my ultimate recommendation would be to try and plan enough time to travel through both.
Good luck and enjoy your travels whereever.
