The Regent Palace Hotel off Piccadilly Circus. Cheap as chips and dead central.

The English Youth Hostel Assoication http://www.yha.org.uk/ has about 6 youth hostels aroud London. My experience with YHA hostels is that they are good.
Hostelworld http://www.hostelworld.com/ will list YHA and indepednant hostels in London. Independants can be extremely good or extremely bad.

London + good + cheap in the same sentence?
Try under Waterloo bridge; this has been an economical resting place for many years.

There are some cheap hotels if you look hard enough. The Generator is one of the cheapest . On booking.com you can get a place for £15 a night

I have stayed there. It is actually pretty good, if you really are a backpacker, and don’t expect things like en-suite. It is in Piccadilly Circus (it really is! I couldn’t possibly be more central), and they charge 12 pounds per person per night (on weekdays, weekend is 15) in 10 bed dorms. I stayed in one of these and it’s not that bad. Usually there’s only you in the room, cos everyone’s having a great time somewhere else. So I strongly recommend it.

Try the globetrotter inn in Ravenscourt Gardens ( Stamford Brook Station )
It is a clean, safe and friendly hostel, you can stay in a 6 shared for about 19 pounds per day
So far I think it is the best value for your money, you may find hostels which cost less, but that comes down to really crappy conditions where you don’t want to go

I googled London Hostels and came up with a wide variety of places. Are you a student? Youth hostels are usually a good deal, that is how I traveled on my student ID in the 70′s. Good Luck and have fun!
