A backpacker is someone who enjoys the outdoors (hiking, camping, etc.) and carries their gear on their back (typically in a backpack) and this is characteristically done for leisure. I have never heard of a backpacker in the context of a job.

Are you sure they are saying backpacker?
The only backpacker, with which I am familar is a person that goes into to the wildlerness to hike, and wears a backpack to carry his food and clothing.

A Backpacker is someone who travels around the world with nothing other than what he keeps in his backpack. He takes hikes and may hug a tree or two.
Whoever told you this doesn't think much of your abilities or drive.

maybe someone who works alone in the forest, or is driven into the forest because of in ability to locate said work, not sure. But, I would agree with a previous repondant that whomever told you this is trying to insult you...not very kind at all.

A backpacker is someone who is basically hiking/camping/traveling & everything they need to survive for the duration of their trip, is in their backpack!

It sounds like someone is being derisive about your abilities, or lack thereof. In my younger days I did some back-packing. Backpack filled with: clothing, food, sleeping bag, and whatever else you may need. Then you start walking. Go where-ever when-ever. It wouldn't hurt to try. I suggest taking a camera, with digital make sure you have plenty of large memory chips. Writing pads. Keep track of every picture you take, things you see, things you do. There are many people who have become successful wildlife photographers and authors by starting this way. Unfortunately I went without the camera or writing pads. I still have a lot of good memories.
