What Are The Requirements For Backpacker Hostels?

i’ve tried finding out if there is an age restriction—it seems all i see are younger people–are there specific places for seniors?

No, no specific places for seniors. But that doesn’t mean that older people cannot stay at hostels, just that most hostels cater and advertise primarily to the younger crowd.
Older people usually choose to stay at small family pensions, bed & breakfasts or such as they like their privacy.
But I also met quite a number of seniors in so-called youth hostels, the oldest was a 74-year-old woman from Australia who wanted to have a few fun days in London before she visited her sister in Edinburgh.
And hostels in rural Sweden are supposed to be a stronghold of the 50+ crowd, but I have never been there and thus cannot verify.
The only hostels with an age restriction are the official HI/YHA hostels in Bavaria. These hostels are partially sponsored by the government with funds specifically set aside for kids and teens, so they do not allow single travellers over 26 in.

I don’t believe there is specific places for seniors.
My suggestions would be to try hostelworld.com or hostels.com
they let you put in criteria. Somehostels even let you get small single rooms if the idea of sharing a room with a bunch of college kids doesn’t sound appealing.
On the other hand, I have never had a bad experience in a hostel as most people who are there are nice and helpful if you are not sure what all to see in the city. It was also nice (since I was traveling alone) to have a sort of communal atmosphere at night. The one hostel i stayed at in Rome would open up wine in the evenings and watch movies if you didn’t want to go bar-hopping.
