It's hard to make the argument that the U.S. shares a significant portion of the blame for local military dictatorships, communism, and ethnic / religious tensions that have existed for centuries. As a tourist, you are perfectly safe, even though you have to bring all your money with you on the plane because there isn't a single ATM in the country. The junta is so hard on crimes against tourists that crime really isn't a problem (if you're a tourist, that is). The people are really nice and there's a lot to see there. But by all means, stay scared and don't go there. I'd like to go back some day and if y'all stay scared then that's less of a crowd for me to deal with. Depressing? Maybe. Dangerous?
