I believe there was also a much more recent case involving a British couple, in which the male was murdered but the female survived and lived to testify against the killer. I honestly don't think two such cases warrant the belief that Australia is crawling with backpacker murderers. That would be seriously silly. I agree with what some others have already said, though. I think the only real dangers associated with Australia concern the Outback. Killer crocodiles and poisonous snakes and spiders seem far more likely to be a threat than a handful of stray psychopaths. There are plenty of murderers here in the US, as well as in most other countries around the world, so I think it unlikely Australia is developing a unique reputation for this problem.
