Today, I think it would simply define someone who is an underground “elitist”.
Some people consider it a diss, personally, I consider myself one, and am almost to the point of being proud of it.

The term “backpacker” derives from the 90s when underground rappers used to carry a backpack with CDs and graffiti materials. These rappers used to sell there CDs right out of there backpack and and these rappers were against the mainstream that did not represent the real essence of Hip-Hop. The term Backpacker became a symbol of someone who only listens to underground music or a rapper who is keep the culture in my mind.
