I am looking to buy a car in Toronto, then drive to Winnipeg. What is required in purchasing a car? Registration etc

When you buy a car, the seller will sign over the registration papers to you, tear off their part and give you the rest. You will need a bill of sale showing the final price, seller’s name and date, and that there are no liens or encumberances on the vehicle (just for your own financial protection). You need a valid Driver’s Licence to register it in your name. If you have an International Driver’s Licence that would probably be accepted, along with your Australian Driver’s Licence. I think you will need evidence of a Canadian address as well. Then you go and register it and insure it and have to pay for the provincial sales tax, the registration and the insurance. In Ontario, “Resale vehicles require a valid Drive Clean Pass Certificate for license registration if the model year is 1988 or newer and older then the current calendar year”. I have included a link for that. In your situation, I believe I would check out the Driver’s Licence requirements before you purchase.

Its a pain in the ***! I wish it was easy. Getting insurance might be a problem since you aren’t a citizen. I would rent or borrow! If you get pulled over with no insurance you can face a HUGE fine, plus your car will be towed!
You may be able to find an insurance company that can insure you for a month or two (maybe) Also, if you plan on putting toronto as your address, you will pay more than someone who lives in a smaller city or town.
Good Luck!

And you will have to pay cash as you do not have Canadian Credit if you wanted to finance it.
