i backpacked through Western Europe on my own last summer. I stayed in hostels and a few hotels……and a few train stations : ) I think the biggest thing I noticed was I was not treated as well at the actual hotels, but the hostel crowd (20-somethings) were incredibly accepting. I didn’t have any problems with local people in any country i went to, even when I was toting around my 35 lb. backpack on the metro. Most people I met thought what I was doing was cool, actually. I guess the only people who I thought treated me a little differently were businesses. But in their defense, I didn’t get to shower regularly….
